![]() Joss greets Mary by telling her that if she values her own life, she will turn a blind eye to the mysterious wagons that come and go in the dead of night. Arriving at the isolated, menacing house on the moors, Mary discovers her aunt to be a pale and battered shadow of her former self, living in terror of her seven-foot, wolf-like husband, and his violent rages and drinking binges. "Mistake" turns out to be an understatement. ![]() "That's no place for a girl," the coach driver tells her when he hears where she's headed, insisting she must surely have made some mistake. ![]() Mary Yellan, 23, having nursed her widowed mother through a final illness, is rattling across the moors on a foul Cornish night, on her way to a new life with her Aunt Patience and Uncle Joss at Jamaica Inn. The story begins in the old-fashioned way. More than anything, though, I remembered the sickening twist towards the end of the book – the cold‑sweat moment when you realise that, just like Mary, you've been so busy fighting off the visible baddies that you've let yourself be blind to the real evil, the most dangerous force of all, which has been waiting there quietly all along. ![]()

In this pioneering work, Seth explores the connection between personal beliefs and world events. But how do our realities merge and combine to form mass reactions such as the overthrow of governments, the birth of a new religion, wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and new periods of art, architecture, and technology? Speaking exclusively through Jane Roberts, Seth has repeatedly stressed the concept that we create our own reality according to our individual beliefs. Sincero (Don't Sleep With Your Drummer) brings a fun, feminine verve to now well-tread self-help tropes, offering a promising new title in the genre that's not as completely irreverent as it sounds. ![]() ![]() ![]() The character development in this book is AMAZING (the morally grey characters in the story are some of my favorites). I loved how the crew of the Marigold is able to find a family in each other. I think Fable is one of my favorite young adult heroines of all time. Namesake’s story pulled at my heartstrings and is a tale focused on family, friendship, love, acceptance, and hope. For fans of Saint, don’t despair, Saint still makes an appearance in this book (yay!). While the first book focuses on Fable’s relationship with her father, Namesake focuses on Fable’s relationship with her mother. The narrator, Emma Lysy did a fantastic job bringing the different characters to life in the audiobook version. Adrienne Young’s sequel to smash hit Fable picks up right where the last book left off, with Fable in a bit of a pickle and in need of rescuing as she is taken captive on the Luna. Namesake is one of my most anticipated reads this year, and it didn’t disappoint. Swashbuckling adventure with romance and family ![]() |
